The Plant medicine and Traditional Healers Association, has called for greater recognition for traditional medicine practitioners to enhance health care delivery in the country.
The President of the Association, Dr. Samuel Akadzah, told Radio Ghana that, traditional healers are playing crucial roles in health care delivery and should be supported.
He explained that, traditional healers have been curing some diseases which orthodox medicines are unable to cure. It is therefore important for government to incorporate herbal medicines into the health care delivery system to promote herbal-base treatment.
He suggested the formation of national council for traditional medicine practitioners to oversee the activities of the
practitioners to eliminate the fake ones from the sector.
A herbal medicine seller at Tema Community One market, Joycelyne Owusu Obidea said, most people patronize traditional medicines because of their efficacy and naturalness. She said traditional medicines continue to complement the orthodox medicines in the cure of most diseases. She advised the public to buy only traditional and plant medicines which have been approved by the Food and Drugs Board.

I think it's time for them to be recognized so that their knowledge and skills can be integrated to the healthcare system.
