Traditional healers demand respect

Health Department Director General Thami Mseleku has promised to respond to traditional healers’ demands soon.

Hundreds of traditional healers marched to the department’s offices in Pretoria on Thursday.

Police were forced to use pepper spray when protesters tried to storm the offices after waiting for two hours to hand over their memorandum.

Traditional healers have accused government of not taking them seriously, saying its policies do not fully recognise African traditional medicine.

The Traditional Healers Organisation’s Pephsile Maseko said they were not being included in the National Health Insurance Plan.

Maseko called on government to recognise traditional medicine as a primary healthcare resource.

Mseleku promised meetings would be held soon to discuss their concerns.
